While we were in Salt Lake City over Christmas break we had the pleasure of shooting some senior photos for Marilyn’s cousin, Alana. Alana asked us to shoot a couple different sessions of senior photos to show the progression of her senior year of high school. Since Marilyn’s family was celebrating Christmas in Utah this year, I thought it would be a lot of fun to shoot a session in a wooded area with tall pine trees and lots of snow. There are no mountains or many giant pine trees in Oklahoma, so I wanted to take advantage of capturing these elements in her photos.
While in Utah, we spent a few days on the slopes skiing and snowboarding at Brighton. On one of the drives up the mountain pass, I caught a glimpse of a camp area called, “The Spruces,” and instantly knew I wanted to shoot Alana’s photos there. It ended up working out perfectly. We came across a snowshoe path where there was great tree coverage; and the snow worked snow as an amazing bounce to cast a nice soft light on Alana for the photos.
There are a couple things that made this a fun and unique shoot: first was the location; it really set the mood for the session. The second was Alana’s amazing style, she had a couple different outfits that were classy, but also had a nice balance with an adventure vibe. The last item that made the shoot was her hair. The color of red worked perfectly in this setting as the color contrasted off the green pine trees and popped against the white snow. We were thrilled to be able to capture Alana’s beauty and fun style in her senior year!
