Reading one of our favorite childrens books 'And the Light Comes In' by Amy Grimes | Brewedtogether.comBack when we were pregnant and when it came to thinking about the ideals we wanted to instill into our own child (before we even knew the gender), we considered how important we found reading to our children to be. We prepared before Genevieve’s birth by filling her nursery with several childrens books from family members or books that we hand-picked for the sentimental value or aesthetic styles. We’ve read several books that correlate that reading to your children even from birth can really help them get off to a great start in life. Because of this we’ve made a habit of reading to Genevieve every day with several childrens books.

We wanted to share that in our search of great childrens books we recently discovered an amazing illustrator and childrens book author through Instagram named Amy Grimes. Amy and her husband Russ together create childrens stories that are beautifully written and depicted through Amy Grimes’ artwork. Here’s a little more about Amy’s process from her own words:

“For me, it all starts with a story… as a child, fairytales and fantastic illustrations captivated my mind and sparked my passion for beautiful artwork and writing. Although I’ve created many kinds of art over the years, my favorite works of art are those inspired by stories. All of my art originates from the stories I write. I see my “story paintings” as windows that provide just enough to start the observer down the path, but leave a little mystery to ignite their imagination. Light shining out of the darkness is my favorite and most recurring theme. I believe that artwork that reflects goodness and truth can bring light into peoples lives, encouraging them and giving them hope. My inspiration comes from long walks, rambling prayers, starry skies, and dreamy fairy tales. I enjoy a quiet life with my husband and two daughters, in a house full of treasured books and bright colors. A sleek, black cat and a nervous, brown rabbit keep me company each day while I paint.”

We wanted to share about this lovely artist as she and her husband have recently worked hard to self-publish some of her work and have started their business adventure with her books. We absolutely love supporting small businesses and especially ones that fall into the category of supporting healthy reading habits for our children! Amy and her husband also sell prints of some of her illustrations, which we love. The one you can see we have framed on our shelves is close to our hearts since it depicts a little red-headed boy and dark-haired girl. In our opinion it seems like the perfect childrens book for our family. I felt very similar to how you did when preparing our child’s library prior to his arrival. As a teacher, I know there is a huge connection between the achievement of kids who read for fun in their spare time and kids who don’t. It’s so important to instill this culture in your household early. Love your review and your photos are gorgeous.

We read to all our five children at nap time and bed time. They were reading by themselves by kindergarten. Coincidence? I think not.
I will definitely check out Amy Grimes. Wonderful article!

I love this! I’m always looking for new reading material for when I babysit my niece. She’s about 8 months old now so she should love this like your daughter did!
