I’m sure most of you remember my post last month about learning a new skill, right? I was thrilled to teach myself calligraphy by taking a Skillshare class and practicing what I learned every day for 30 minutes for 30 days. I even took it upon myself to create a hashtag (#btlearneveryday) that I would use to post my process photos. I’m not sure whether it’s learning a skill that I actually pursue on my own or if it just came naturally, but I immediately fell in love with the art of calligraphy. I’ve always loved drawing and doodling. I even thought at one point about doing fashion illustrations for a living (which could still be a dream job for one day).
So when I tried my hand at calligraphy, it just seemed so natural as if it were the next step for me in furthering my skills. Of course I didn’t ‘get good at it’ overnight. I believe I took 2 weeks of exploring the correct tools to use. And in the process of figuring out the correct pen and nibs for me to use, I also discovered that ink doesn’t just flow perfectly on any paper. Oh yes, you have to buy special paper. Once I finally figured out what the proper tools were for me to use, I was able to really practice my hand-lettering style. Now that is something I can say I will always be perfecting. I have definitely learned how to write calligraphy, but my biggest ongoing challenge this year will be finding my style.
I have written a few posts leading up to this one within these 30 days and have absolutely loved the process. See the photos below of some of my process. Note that not every letter is written perfectly. There’s definitely some smudging going on and spacing issues. I hope that you all will be challenged this year to take it upon yourself to learn a new skill. While my 30 days of practicing for 30 minutes a day is technically over, I have found that I am much more confident in my abilities and will continue to learn, practice, and share!
